After nearly three decades in the making, the Anishinabek Nation Governance Agreement Act, a self-government agreement between Canada, the Anishinabek Nation and five First Nations that ratified the Agreement, received Royal Assent in the House of Commons June 23, 2022. Below are the details and videos that capture the historic event as it rolled out from ratification, to virtual signing to law.
On April 6th, 2022 Canada and five Anishinabek First Nation communities made history with the virtual signing of the Anishinabek Nation Governance Agreement.
The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, joined Anishinabek Nation Grand Council Chief Reg Niganobe, Chief Lloyd Myke of Magnetawan First Nation, Gimaa Kwe Rhonda Williams-Lovett of Moose Deer Point First Nation, Chief Scott McLeod of Nipissing First Nation, Chief Larry Roque of Wahnapitae First Nation and Chief Irene Kells of Zhiibaahaasing First Nation for the virtual signing ceremony.
